The South Africa Animal Protection Inspectorate is committed to promoting animal welfare and supporting lawful action against cruelty, neglect and abuse.
We support the protection of animals through responsible inspections, investigations, documentation and appropriate intervention.
Complaints are assessed and investigated using professional procedures, proper recordkeeping and lawful evidence-handling practices.
Our work is guided by applicable animal welfare legislation, constitutional principles and lawful enforcement procedures.
SAAPI receives animal welfare complaints, conducts inspections and supports the proper investigation and documentation of suspected cruelty or neglect.
Members of the public may submit information concerning suspected animal cruelty, abuse, neglect or abandonment.
Animal living conditions, access to food and water, shelter, hygiene, injuries and general welfare may be assessed during an inspection.
Relevant photographs, videos, statements, observations and supporting records may be collected and documented.
Serious reports involving injured animals or an immediate threat to animal welfare may be assessed for urgent intervention.
Where necessary, matters may require cooperation with veterinarians, law-enforcement agencies, municipalities or other authorised bodies.
Complaints, inspection findings, evidence and follow-up actions are recorded within the SAAPI case-management system.
Animal welfare matters must be handled in accordance with applicable South African legislation and lawful procedures.
